Clean, green, cheap and much healthier!

Since moving to the country our constant concern has been the tiger worms in our septic tank. For those of you on town sewage…all of our – hmmm – dirty water and solids go into a tank with thousands of lucky worms who convert the ‘yuk’ into safe garden products.

So our worms are essential for the health of our sewage conversion. Naturally the system comes with a warning that virtually all household cleaning products will kill these pets. Think whether you would put Dettol into your dogs water…no don’t… it’s horrible. The toxic cleaners also kill all of the good bacteria that the system is producing (Dettol kills 99% of all household germs – good and bad)!

It makes me think that these cleaners are also causing allergic reactions by killing good as well as bad bacteria in our homes. So yesterday I tried a popular eco-cleaner on our shower glass. Let’s be honest – shower glass is the most difficult part of the house to clean. I am determined to keep it shiny from the start so that the film of calcium and body oil doesn’t build up. The cleaner didn’t work – I gently stroked the glass after 10 minutes of cleaning and it was still rough!

So I ‘Googled’ natural shower cleaner. Guess what – the internet is full of easy cleaning hacks that are cheap, easy and that I should have been using instead of spending money on supermarket products!
The recipe I used was 50-50 white vinegar and washing up liquid. Wow – it was so easy and my glass is sparkling. Even better, John was so impressed that he volunteered to clean it next time; we may fight over it. Luckily we have been challenged to find alternatives and this is one of them – white vinegar. Even if you don’t have worms as pets, have a go…you only have allergies to lose…and it will save you money. I am now working on other uses for white  vinegar – maybe the oven – the possibilities are endless!
